@mattvsjapan have you ever taken a JLPT or do you not approve of them at all?
I haven't taken it personally, but I have looked at enough practice tests to know that it's a joke that I could pass in my sleep. I don't think it's a good measure of Japanese ability at all but if you want the credentials for work opportunities I think that's valid

Nah I've no interest in living or working in Japan but it would be nice to have some sort of proof of ability. I like to set a goal :)

Like Dogen says, make your goal to have Japanese people ask "how many years have you been living in Japan?" when they first meet you, instead of "上手ですね"

Last compliment I got was "you must be married to a Japanese, right?" Other than that, people are interested in why I speak their language, not in my ability (and lack thereof).
