If you need to learn a "dictionary word", there are many other sources you can use to find alternate sentences with the word in it

I think I need to be more picky in general. I can read an article about linguistics or philosophy 70% but struggle with a manga, maybe 40%.

The stuff I read typically correlates to my interests, and I miss a lot of “basic” vocabulary like “fridge” and such.

If you need to know the word for fridge, you will come across it. You can learn it then. Until then, don't go out of your way looking for it
