Does an 80/20 time investment between immersing and reading sound reasonable?

It totally depends on one's goals. For most people, a 50/50 ratio will probably be an ideal balance. For people who truly want a native accent, I recommend avoiding all reading for the first year.

What kind of reading? I found that knowing Hiragana and Katakana helped me avoid a lot of the pronunciation mistakes that seeing the words printed in romaji was starting to cause early on. Also, speech is important, but getting in the habit of not reading can also be harmful.

I think he means reading without audio.

Well, agreed if that's the case.

...what about running your computer in Japanese, playing games, general Japan-ification of your environment? or do you mean sitting down and trying to power through manga too early?

I have been trying to find a lot of JRPGS with a lot of voice acting, so I can 'immerse' as i try to read and keep up the audio. It's mostly speed reading I'm doing basically. Trying to take notice of the audio as it passes kanji I don't know how to read.
