My paper on human audition is out! It shows that an involuntary response (pupil dilation) can be as sensitive as traditional methods of testing...which gives us a way to test sensory performance in people who are unable to respond.

My lab will be moving to Rochester in May-June 2020, and I am very excited for the opportunity to refresh and re-organize the lab (and explore new research directions)! I'll be looking for good people who want to study the neurobiology of smell, starting this summer. (5/6)

So, what is this paper about? SYNPLA is a method to label synapses in a specific pathway that recently underwent LTP. The principle is simple. We exploit the fact that after LTP GluA1 temporarily moves into the synapse from extra-synaptic pools.

Looking over some sensory cortex data getting more and more worried as the encoding model is not picking up any stimulus-tuned neurons. Animal after animal after animal. Had experienced student been imaging wrong area for 3 months!? Nope. It was shuffled data. 😂

Wonderful work, all! I am looking forward to comparisons with the larval brain. "a few lACA-associated mushroom body intrinsic neurons (Kenyon cells) solely receive thermosensory inputs"--just like in larva, in Eichler et al. 2017

Adult ribbonfish are rarely seen, but their young travel to the ocean's surface at night. We have no idea why their bodies are so ornate, but they're clearly making an impression! Video by the amazing Songda Cai: (watch w/ sound!)
