Re the "Wuhan coronavirus contains sequences from HIV, and that can't be accidental!" paper. I've read it, it's interesting, but I'm unconvinced. The supposedly HIV-origin sequences are very short, it's not clear how big a database they searched to find them, and there seems /

Further to that - the authors say in a couple of places that they scanned "all viruses" for the mystery sequences. That in itself is a Hell of a claim; presumably they mean all viruses in some specific database, but they should say so much more clearly...

...and they found the sequences in Wuhan coronavirus and in HIV, and in no other viruses. But before concluding anything big it seems obvious that they ought to scan many possible host organisms; even more likely places for viruses to pick up genetic material than other viruses.
