"The ice in Antarctica holds 90% of the world's fresh water, and 80% of that ice is in the eastern part of the continent." What is going on in Antarctica is crucial for everyone on the 🌏 to understand, especially if you live on or near the coast, you are going to be affected.

Cautious relief - but has anyone actually done a surface survivability test with nCoV?

Some good news on coronavirus: doctors in Bangkok said drug treatment w/ mixture of anti-HIV drugs lopinavir & ritonavir, in combo w/ flu drug oseltamivir in large doses in 48 hrs helped vastly improve health of severe coronavirus patients under their care

If the West want to stop Assad bombing hospitals in Idlib, now would be the time to reach out to Ankara. There is very little time left to put an end to the slaughter. Deterrence can freeze the conflict and save human life, it is imperative that the international community acts.

Excellent article on how *one* Antarctic glacier alone -- already melting fast -- can raise sea level by .5 meters (huge impact to Miami, London, NYC, global coastal cities) Brave scientists doing superb work & rigorous science under extreme conditions.

Only tweet you’ll see from me: How many Star Trek fans were temporarily excited by a “violation of the Neutral Zone”? 😉 (My wife likes the Super Bowl. As an investor in companies that detect & help remediate brain injury, I try to tune out Concussion Bowl...)

2/ …Ebola & nCoV are just 2 of recent “grenades”, along w/ less reported but still lethal threats (eg, C. Auris) In a world wired for pandemics (travel, urbanization, zoonoses) we should be *tripling down* on fast detection, rapid drug dev & approval, pandemic surveillance

1/ Also - folks sneering “it’s not even as bad as flu” or “alarmism is the threat” - are saying “this most recent grenade in our living room barely killed anyone” 🧐 Statistically, a microbial pandemic will kill 100s of M of people *soon* if we remain unprepared... (cont)

This is a huge loss for the US, for Nigeria, and for Africa as a whole I am all for strong national security, but you can have that and have brilliant & well-meaning people in your country at the same time - they are not incompatible

There is an emergency protocol that universities and hospitals, many whom have their own nCoV pcr capability, could apply for. Wondering if they are. All the major universities and large hospital systems can do it. No way can CDC handle the volume.

Doctors may have ignored a less apparent and hidden source of the spread of the coronavirus: diarrhea

Our capacity to identify potential outbreaks of early, and intervene to prevent spread, is well served by expanding access to the PCR based test for the virus. The test is based on a common Roche platform, and is a fairly routine technology.

Caijing is a reputable outlet and has much more fearless reporting than most PRC sources - not surprising they were censored (has happened before in their other reports on corruption & ineptitude) Worth a read, thanks for sharing Cc

The fact that it takes the five to seven days to generate results from a test they’ve insisted on centralizing - in a fast, asymptomatic transmission regime - is very disturbing There should be fastPCR at every hospital and every port of entry in the US
