Iniki got around that because it came from the south and hit Kauai thus avoiding the shredders known as Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea

Good analogy! One difference: Madeline is stronger for its longitude than Iselle was (eg, 110 kts vs 80 kts at 150°W).
