I wrote a piece for @WSJopinion in 2008 attacking the proposed Lieberman selection for exactly that reason. Think Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

Yep. It’s much easier to second guess McCain’s decision, now. Even he is doing that. But people tend to forget the political environment at the time.
-
I remember the political climate of 2008. Obama campaign called the Clinton’s racist and John McCain called his wife horrible names https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/07/report-mccains-profane-ti_n_95429.html …pic.twitter.com/Nd3Sq0H7Lb

Even if the "base" accepted Lieberman, it wouldn't have matter. It's fashionable to blame Sarah Palin for the 2008 loss. That's bunk. The housing collapse sunk McCain. There's nothing Lieberman could have done to prevent that.

The Palin pick was a riverboat gamble by McCain that nearly paid off- And the outside economic events were uncontrollable

The only reason McCain got my vote was because I liked Sarah. She brought life into his dull campaign.
-
Same here. Picking McCain was the wrong choice, not Palin.

McCain was never honest with the country or with conservatives. His choice of VP was never an issue, he was the loser at the top of the ticket. John Wayne could have been his VP and he still would have lost.
-
No one paying attention has ever trusted John McCain. Only now we see his true colors.

McTurd has no legacy except as a classless, hateful loser.

How convenient McCain has a conservative woman to blame while he boasted accolades about his opponent during campaign. Obama "sounded" more conservative than McCain's ever voted. Huge crowds for Sarah Palin, McCain could barely fill the bleachers.
-
McCain became jealous of Palin and she threatened his never attending to win campaign. He threw her under the bus so he could lose.

Sorry should have read intending to win. Twitter where is our edit button?

What ifs are cute, but reality check... look at the factual damage Palin has done to what was the GOP.
-
What?????
Palin did not do damage...she was viciously & unfairly attacked then as Trump is now. -
You seem so passionate about your self assured correctness. As a former Palin and Newt supporter, I can verify that facts are harsh truth. Turning off FOX would possibly be your first step toward reality.
#ExGOP -
No, I’ll keep Fox on. Find a legitimate argument and stop using lazy “Fox News” excuses like your new friends on the left.
