Lets consider a new bill that “requires explicit opt-in consent from users to use, share, or sell any personal information...” Sounds good, right? But Facebook *already* has your data. This would almost guarantee that no NEW competitor could ever, well, compete w/ FB. That’s all.

The trick will be to make changes that help things more than they hurt things. Regulations can be very good, but a big danger is that they protect incumbents and discourage competition.

Some regulations are warranted ... similar to the FCC and CPNI ... I cannot believe this wasn't raised yesterday. People interested in what applies to the Telecom industry and Customer Proprietary Network Information should research it -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer_proprietary_network_information …

Implementing a Social Media Platform CPNI policy would go a long way. These 2 for starters: #1 Limit info which platforms provide to 3rd-parties without affirmative consent of account holders #2 Define when and how platform providers can share account details, posts, and photos

Do u want to simplify reading news? My advice is to use the Fееdster app. All the news from social networks and other sources in one place, fresh interface and easy to use. Link hеrе

U R correct Matt -- "opt-in" going forward doesn't provide protection for those already having accounts. FB (like many platforms) took advantage of a mostly ignorant market that wanted to use the "shiny object ". This is a e-disaster.
