I think people who see Trumpism as something aberrant in the Republican Party haven't though much about the history of the Republican Party. Unless they're NeverTrumpers, in which case they're in a state of denial. 1/

*zero* sense. Republicans can't win long-term with just the white working class, but they can't win with just the suburbs, either.
-
Point taken, but to identify "Trumpism" and "populism" as functionally identical is a straw man. Neither Rs nor Ds can survive without accommodating a populist wing: Duh, got it. But Trumpism is wayyyy beyond populism.
-
I think the conservative wing of the party tried to control the populist wing by lying to them, feeding their anger and never correcting them with facts. I think an event like Trump became inevitable but the possibility of correcting is still there.

As the demographics started to get away from the GOP, they came to rely on the nativist wing to shore up their coalition. Bush 2 was able to thread the needle on this while still being a child of the establishment. But just barely. With Trump the balancing act failed.

Wait - how did this intelligent, well-written, courteous exchange happen on Twitter? Who are you people?

Thanks. It’s not as hard as people think.

Jeb and Kasich don't make much sense, period.

Kasich got down to the end and had cross-over strength. I would not discount what he did. Jeb Bush was an outlier due to his brother.
