I'm sorry - that qualifies as courageous? He was elected by the people of Florida, and he gets a gold star for facing them in person after a school shooting? How sad that our standards are so low for politicians. This kind of sentiment shows just how deep the NRA rot goes.

The country is deeply divided. We refuse to listen to people with different opinions. When someone actually listens, unfortunately, they get penalized. We aren’t incentivizing progress, which is what we need if we are to come together.
-
He’s an elected official. If the majority of the people disagree with you, then you should expect to suffer in the polls. This is insane. R’s have duped everyone into believing that they should get a gold star just for LISTENING to their voters.
-
The point is that he lost points for listening to the other side. The lesson learned is not to do that and just play to the base.
-
And I don’t agree. That may be the lesson short term, but I think the long term lesson will be if you ignore the will of the majority and simply pander to your base, you will be voted out. He’s the senator for a whole state, not a gerrymandered, deeply red congressional district.
-
Your logic would be great if true. But, that’s precisely what is saddening people here. He (and others who follow his lead) is much more likely to be voted out NOW for not pandering enough to his base. I’d prefer your world ... it just doesn’t exist today.
-
Okay. We will see. I don’t agree, but maybe I’m wrong. Democrats are winning in red states all over the country, I don’t think Florida is red enough to be exempt from that. The base tends to stick with you, it’s the rest of the people you have to win over.

Showing up was his duty. He didn't deserve to be soft-balled just for doing his job. Scott should be destroyed for his cowardice though.

"liberal enemies"? Can you provide some insight into your choice of words here? They're his constituents who suffered a tragedy and were looking for answers and changes. See
@MerriamWebsterhttps://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/enemy … -
Exactly. Why label anyone who disagrees with conservatives as Liberal 'enemies'. Why use such hateful terms? What happened to having serious & reasonable policy discussions and a commitment to doing the best for our children?Has trumpism swallowed conservatives whole permanently?
-
Yup that’s exactly what happened
-
Nassau County sounds like a fun swell place, & probably a role model for trumpism.

He could have won over the audience by actually making substantive concessions on gun control. Just showing up and listening isn't all that helpful; the people in that meeting had specific policy demands that Rubio didn't agree to.
-
His base thinks he made too many concessions.
-
Right. The smart play for Rubio would be to become a decent human being and back real gun control. If that's not an option for him, he shouldn't have gone at all.
-
Well he is not up again until 2022, so it does not really matter.

Joe, if you put the bar for Rubio any lower, it would be underground.

“...the audience beat him up for it.” What?!? Did you expect this forum to forgive views they adamantly disagree with just because he did what an elected rep should feel compelled to do (attend)? They didn’t beat him up. They beat up his viewpoint.
