I think Trump could actually solve the school shooting problem. It wouldn’t be easy. But here’s how... http://thebea.st/2ocWLYd?source=twitter&via=mobile … via @thedailybeast

Why did we go along so easily with all the airport changes for safety (shoes off, hours early, invasive searches and numerous flight restrictions), but we can’t even brainstorm ideas for gun reform without everyone losing their minds?

Are you suggesting that anyone entering a school should be subject to searches like those at airports?

No, I didn’t suggest that at all. My point was we immediately implemented changes on flights for our safety. We won’t even discuss ideas for school safety against mass shootings.

I didn't read your tweet that way. I would be on board with my local school board coming up with measures to improve school safety. I'm not in favor of the Federal Govt coming up with those ideas and forcing that on all schools.

Well, the money to do anything would have to come from the government as schools can’t and shouldn’t be expected to pay for their own protection. I wish I knew the answer, smarter people than me need to be discussing it, but they aren’t.

Local school districts and its communities could determine the best way to protect its schools with its budget. I would expect the ideas, methods and innovations would be far greater and more flexible than a Fed Govt ran program.

That’s fine. My point is we need to do something. We aren’t doing anything. You say local, I say both government and local, the point is do something. Everyone is so dug into their partisan trenches nobody is taking any action.

Thanks for recognizing that sensible gun laws and increased mental health resources aren’t mutually exclusive.

I predict Trump will not rise to the occasion. I think the probability I'm correct is about 99.9%

Good article. To fix the problem in the manner outlined, which to me seems reasonable, we must first concede that gun ownership is a fundamental right, instead of constantly pointing to "other" countries. This is an American problem requiring an American solution.

Great article! However sadly I agree that @realDonaldTrump has the opportunity to come with a solution but he won't raise to the occasion.

Read it this morning. You’re right that’s it’s more than a gun issue. What we need to start looking at is what types of pharmaceuticals these people are on. Maybe would be a good time to start talking about that too.

Very well-reasoned article. Let's hope that people on both sides can come to realize the immense complexity of this issue and come to a reasonable compromise to help ensure safer schools and a safer nation.
