I've had some time to digest the #sotu, and here's my take: Given who Trump is & that his goals are more ambitious than incremental governance, political survival, or even popularity (it's about redefining everything)--I'm not sure liberals realize how effective this speech was.
Although he remains wildly unpopular and might just get himself impeached, I think he is shifting the Overton window in pretty amazing ways. Things that were once unthinkable are now possible. I think he even has a shot at immigration reform.

I think I agree with all that, just not sure that the speech itself did all that much to move the needle in terms of immigration reform or other policy

But that's a common lament about SOTU speeches. I think it did as much or more as could be expected. The question for me is if this is indicative of more to come, or just a one-time thing.

In other words, we grade Trump on a curve. How about we grade Trump compared to his actions not his words off a TelePrompTer Or we grade compared to other Prez?

I think his popularity, or the supposed lack of, is one of the most misjudged things about his Presidency.

This speech was welcomed by Republicans. Republicans are not synonymous with middle America.
