I must confess that I constantly wrestle w/ this dilemma. *Some* of the norms Trump is eroding needed to go. No *normal* Republican pol could have done some of the things he has accomplished. By the same token, I still have serious concerns...https://twitter.com/byronyork/status/956150797670256640 …

I really try to be open minded and willing to accept the possibility that I don’t fully understand things. This is a conservative instinct. And so I’m open to the possibility that I didn’t appreciate some of the good things others saw in Trump.

I’m also reflexively contrarian. When I see the mob going one way, I want to go the other. So when I see so much anti-Trump hysteria in the media, I’m likely to be question it a bit. Being skeptical about going w/ the crowd is hopefully a journalistic attribute.

Agree with everything you said. Just because I was NeverTrump doesn't at all mean I can't recognize when Trump does something right. Frankly...I had the same standard when Obama was President.

Contrarianism can get an unfairly bad rep--it can help draw attention to what the crowd has missed. (Of course, having some of my own contrarian tendencies, I would say that...)

My biggest issue with, both the pro and anti Trump pundits, is the all or nothing sentiment. Republicans, for instance, scream “deep state, secret society” crap, and Dems scream, “impeach, jail, etc”. Neither is sane, helpful or productive. Critical thinking is gone on both sides

Come on man... lol. Republicanism is all about the big white crowd and maintaining that white crowd. It's about dogmatism. Authoritarianism. It's about being anti intellectual and anti science. You're describing yourself as a Liberal. Not the conservative you are.

If you truly believed as you claim, you couldn't possibly continue as a Republican. No joke. It's an impossibility.
