I must confess that I constantly wrestle w/ this dilemma. *Some* of the norms Trump is eroding needed to go. No *normal* Republican pol could have done some of the things he has accomplished. By the same token, I still have serious concerns...https://twitter.com/byronyork/status/956150797670256640 …

I really try to be open minded and willing to accept the possibility that I don’t fully understand things. This is a conservative instinct. And so I’m open to the possibility that I didn’t appreciate some of the good things others saw in Trump.

I’m also reflexively contrarian. When I see the mob going one way, I want to go the other. So when I see so much anti-Trump hysteria in the media, I’m likely to be question it a bit. Being skeptical about going w/ the crowd is hopefully a journalistic attribute.

Breaking norms about no financial disclosure, no conflicts of interest, no nepotism, not cooperating with a hostile foreign power, etc., is a non-starter for me. All else is just an accident. Even a broken clock...etc.

What accomplishments so far that no normal Republican could have achieved? His biggest achievement, tax plan, was pretty standard GOP establishment fare.

In other words, like all other human beings, he has strengths and weaknesses, and in an election we have to decide what we can live with and what we cannot. I agree.

The norms of don’t sleep with a porn star while your 3rd wife sits at home with your infant child? Personally, I had no problem with that norm. You are also giving Trump way too much credit dude

Also to be clear, to the extent Trump is eroding these norms, that is solely the incidental result of his severe personality disorder rather than any sort of political plan. Surely you see that...

Which of the “norms Trump is eroding” needed to go? Respect for the FBI and CIA? Support for the concept of an independent press? The notifion that the President should try to bring people together, or at least not pull them apart? Basic civility? Respect for facts?

What norms? The idea that the American news media tells anything remotely resembling the truth, for one. The notion academia exists to educate, for another. The belief that the left care about anything other than power.

Norms are unimportant. Culture always changes. What matters is if the changes produces better and lasting outcomes.
