Most politicians are blessed with the ability to tap into either Indignation or Compassion. Only the best pols (Reagan, Bill Clinton, et al.) can do both well. This is what happens when a man temperamentally suited for compassion tries to feign indignationhttps://twitter.com/ian_gilbert_/status/953622818205335552 …

In fact, I’ve even brought along a few friends to help explain just how upset I am. You made me do this. @allahpundit pic.twitter.com/oDirzDVniR

I would add this: Reagan & Bill Clinton are examples of pols who were VERY strong at both compassion & indignation. Most pols are mediocre at both (somewhere on the spectrum). Sen. Booker is especially strong at one & especially weak at the other. That's why this looks so bad.

Who is the exact opposite of Booker? Maybe someone like Ted Cruz. He's very, very good at doing indignation. He's not nearly as good at doing compassion.

Everyone has to stretch themselves & occasionally go outside our comfort zones. But there's a danger for temperamentally compassionate pols who want to survive in these angry/polarized times: Feigning indignation looks inauthentic. To thine own self be true.

Of course, the incentives are all skewed toward indignation, anger, and confrontation. Civility doesn't get you noticed. Any pol who wants to preserve his image as a compassionate healer will have a harder time getting attention in this media environment.

It's not just pols. I'm probably temperamentally more like Booker than Cruz. But google my name and see which of my TV segments garnered the most attention. It's almost always me being in a fight. That's not who we are.

I am 66 and remember civil discourse. Sputnik too which still haunts me. Civil Discourse needs to come back now.

No, but you can elicit the best quotes for print with civility.
