A couple things happened in the last week that really surprised me.

2. I’m also somewhat surprised tax reform didn’t garner more attrition from gop Senators. Trump personally offended numerous Sens (McCain, Corker, et al.) & there were legitimate concerns about the budget deficit. Plus, Johnson & Rubio cut deals that didn’t open a Pandora’s box.

Bigger questions for me: 1. Why didn't insurance lobby fight harder? 2. Why did McCain and Collins flip without any real concession? (I get Murkowski & ANWR)

It was always the least popular aspect of the ACA. Why fight for a mandate?
-
You need it if you assume it’s the lynchpin that prevents a “death spiral.”
-
From a policy standpoint, yes. Politically, it was a loser. Would’ve put Dems in favor of a tax penalty. And, if one subscribes to “the worse the better” it fits.

Everyone in my circles was clear about the individual mandate repeal, but I think most people are just so fatigued from the constant onslaught that they can’t press on

SCOTUS deemed it a tax -- so it was fair game to play with under reconciliation rules....Ds could not do anything to prevent Rs from getting rid of it....

I’ve heard some say Obamacare can survive without the individual mandate. Obama himself was originally against it.

I know there is a lot of doom and gloom that dropping the individual mandate is the death spiral for Obamacare, but I tend to agree with you.

I'm not convinced the individual mandate matters, and/or that dropping it dooms Obamacare. Those that don't want/can't afford ACA have options available to them and have found or would find their workaround - I know I found my workaround.

What's surprising? People should not be compelled by penalty of law to enter into commerce as a component of their citizenship. That appears nowhere in the Constitution.
-
Is that from the SCOTUS ruling?
-
That issue was never raised at SCOTUS, I wish it had been. But Obama admin argued mandate was a tax the first case, but in the 2nd case which dealt with the Origination Clause those same lawyers argued the mandate wasn't a tax, but a fine.

Sure, and what was Chief Justice Roberts’ opinion?

Which time?
