Wouldn’t it have been illegal for him to vet his team for political affiliation? And didn’t Mueller immediately respond precisely because of the appearance of impropriety?

I was just going to ask this. I thought it was illegal to do this kind of political vetting, unless prowling through your private text messages is now part of "vetting."
-
It is illegal. To do otherwise would also render the oath moot; you are to defend the Constitution without fear or favor. Everyone has politics.
-
The unspoken crazy part of all this is that if you eliminate all the people who are unsympathetic to the persons being investigated, by default you are left with only people who are sympathetic to those being investigated doing the investigating.
-
I mean, it just strikes me as short-sighted. At some point there will be another Dem (candidate, Pres, whatever) that has a scandal that is worthy of investigation, do you want to be cudgeled to death with this rhetorical weapon you're building?
-
You assume that Republicans will show any sort of consistency on this issue “next time”, as if the last year hasn’t shown us all the standards during the Obama years were just BS
-
Ken Starr, anyone?
-
The Republican position is that only die hard Republicans can conduct a “fair” investigation of anyone in power. At least they’ve been consistent on that one.

Matt, this is pure BS. You Republicans use the same tactic over and over. Frame an issue like you want it then repeat and repeat it to make it fact. It ain’t working this time. If Trump fires Muller this country is going up in smoke.
-
I genuinely think sometimes that they really believe this is okay! I mean, just imagine if Obama had said that Comey couldn't investigate Hillary's emails because he was a registered Republican! Even unwitting people like Matt don't realize how far gone they are!

Victor Davis Hanson is your source? The guy who demanded Obama release his school records? The guy who used the teleprompter joke 7 years past its expiration date? The man who viewed Obama as a know-nothing, but bent over backwards to support the incurious Donald Trump?
-
Don’t get me wrong, there’s no denying Hanson’s work as a classicist and historian of ancient Greek society. But in much the same way that Ben Carson may be a great neuroscientist, being an expert in one field doesn’t translate well here. Hanson is above all a political hack.

Trump is totally gonna fire Mueller on Christmas.
-
Wouldn’t that be a mistake? A lot of Americans are off of work for a good chunk of the week, and *could* protest for days straight with little financial consequence.

Should he have asked their religious affiliations as well? You know, just in case one was a Muslim and Trump wanted to claim "He's a Muslim. I'm banning them from the country. He's biased against me and can't be impartial." Ya know, just like Judge Curiel.

So your position is that before starting his investigation Mueller should have "vetted" the political opinions of everyone who may or may not be involved in the case? In what universe is that a fair way to conduct a criminal investigation?

Yes. It's a lazy position for him to take. Mueller is a by-the-book prosecutor. He is going to go where the facts take him, and that is why the GOP is so terrified.
