Trouble with Americans is you see the world as black and white. A person either as to be a saint or the devil incarnated. The world and people are not like that. Homer had it right. The most nobles act in the Illiad was done by Archilles, who was vain and selfish though out.

I think so. I guess it is their puritan background. Thing have to be a crusade, WWI was packaged as the war to end all wars. WWII is the great crusade against totalitarianism. Most of the world did not see it that way.
