Civilizations need shared heroes—and things to believe in. Nothing is sacred now. Would modern media allow *anyone* to be a hero for long?pic.twitter.com/0byGsQmWCx

Christopher Lasch wrote that “Modernism continues to live off the capital of the creeds it has rejected...” Maybe we’ve run out of capital?

A good start would be for us in media to stop making journos into heroes

Like everyone, journos face a temptation to prioritize their brand platform over preservation of the collective institution.

But what modern journalists have been made into heroes? I suppose there are a few. But not many.

Having destroyed all the real ones, they create new myths. 99% of cinema seems to be Marvel heroes posing as gods.

This is interesting, but impossible when everyone's worst acts can be recorded by any yahoo with a cell phone and immediately disseminated.

Your first point makes the argument moot. Humanity is more important than any one individual.

This is the foundation and purpose of a democracy. Not a 'shared' hero. What is that anyway.

Modern right must ruin any hero from the left. Obama was otherized by the right. Same with Hillary.

This seems to be an impulse that is particular to conservatism. I don't know if progressives are as interested in hero figures as much. Something about tradition, order, symbolism and faith, an "aggressive naivete", that conservatism values.

Why do you believe this? Is it true we “need” heroes? I believe often we want heroes as substitutes for our own personal responsibility.
