Trump exasperated this trend. It would be really hard to be a thoughtful, honest, serious, intellectual who is a GOP booster today.

Imagine how different the GOP coalition would be with a President Rubio or Sasse. Much more college educated/maybe more racially diverse.

Then again, Trump actually won. And maybe America is better off with incompetent Republicans than with competent liberals. It's a theory.

I've been surprised, perhaps naively, with how little Democrats have done to reckon with this since November.https://twitter.com/harrysiegel/status/891631922950156288 …

This is spot-on by @DouthatNYT. I expect, tho, Democrats will embrace the first point and disregard the second one. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/07/29/opinion/sunday/republicans-douthat-politics.html?rref=collection%2Fcolumn%2Fross-douthat&action=click&contentCollection=opinion&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection&_r=0&referer=https://www.nytimes.com/column/ross-douthat … pic.twitter.com/D9jOoaGvNM

Counterpoint: conservatives find an area where liberalism is smart and right, then just argue nonsense endlessly to persuade uneducated ppl

Why have Americans allowed the word "liberal" to be so narrow and redefined? Liberalism is what built your country. Individual Liberty.

Why has the word been taken over by progressives? Itr needs to be taken back and some politicians need to actually stand for liberty.

So GOP incompetence leads to loyalty to DNC from experts. And in turn leads to spiteful revenge AGAINST the DNC. A childish response, no?

Protest vote became Republican backbone as "no" replaced policy. Its easier to gather a mob than to legislate. Tea party illustrates that.
