A lot of people don't like the GOP's 'principles of immigration.' My question: What don't you like? Border security?? http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/31/us/politics/text-of-republicans-principles-on-immigration.html?_r=0 …

@mattklewis they don't like the fact that it fudges on how the triggers preceding legalization will work

@ThePlumLineGS Where does it do that? http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/31/us/politics/text-of-republicans-principles-on-immigration.html?_r=0 …

@mattklewis it doesn't say *what* the triggers preceding legalization will be. See this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/02/03/morning-plum-gop-may-kill-immigration-reform-because-obummer/ …

@ThePlumLineGS That strikes me as an argument for more specifics -- not an argument against these "principles"...

@mattklewis oh, agreed. they don't like these principles because they are vague on this core question

@ThePlumLineGS If they say "Border Security and Interior Enforcement Must Come First," my support is premised on them telling the truth.

@mattklewis it's not clear what that means in practice. does it precede even a probationary/work status? On MSNBC Ryan said it doesn't.

@ThePlumLineGS That wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me, but fair point.

@ThePlumLineGS My point: If someone can't support these general principles, then I'm not sure what immigration reform they could support.

@ThePlumLineGS True. But it's usually cloaked as, "these principles aren't good enough," not "I don't want to do immigration reform."

@mattklewis Yes. The bridge that needs to be crossed is getting to some form of legalization without triggers designed to make it impossible
