@mattklewis optics are by definition subjective, right? If his approval is good and he's ahead his "optics" must be better than you think. -
@sethdmichaels I think there is such a thing as political sagacity. There are political maxims and instincts that generally work (or don't.) -
@mattklewis clearly, a plurality (at least) of voters think Obama "looks like he cares," even if the effort isn't convincing to you.

@mattklewis sure, but isn't the simpler answer "his optics aren't that terrible"? Optics aren't an objective law of physics. -
@sethdmichaels What I find notable is that he seems to be defying the "rules" based on what we think we know about history and politics. -
@mattklewis trust goes a long way. the polls point to people liking, trusting Obama and thinking he cares about them more than Romney.
