I would support moving it to 55 votes—if Dems agreed to keep that in place. That would be an improvement over a simple majority—& is more likely to be achieved. (There’s nothing magic about the number 60.)https://twitter.com/neilcpa/status/1050044767046750208 …

This cannot continue to escalate. What if we had a leader who insisted the senate go back to a 60 vote confirmation threshold...better known as sanity.

It would be 55 for cloture right? I was under the impression it’s always been simple majority for confirmation, the 60 vote requirement was for cloture.

Correct. But the number hasn’t always been 60. It was once even higher. I’d settle for 55.

You would need to not only raise the filibuster threshold, but also enact a rules change that prevents simple majority rules changes.

I don’t think any senate could bind a future one in that way

right, on the first day of a new Senate, a simple majority could always set a new rule. But if the "nuclear option" procedural loophole was fixed, it could only be on that day, which might such a a rules change a bigger part of political campaigns.

What good is an agreement when 51 votes can change it on a political whim?

An agreement only works if you can trust at least some of the people on the other side to honor it. I would hope there are some senate Dems who care enough about the institution to honor that.

I think two thirds vote threshold for Supreme Court nominations to ensure the Senate remains an intrinsically bipartisan institution. Even a sixty vote threshold would ensure buy-in from the majority and minority parties. Simple majority threshold turns Senate into the House

You don't think that the dems would just stonewall? Remember what happened to Gorsuch. If the Republicans had 56 seats we would be in the exact same situation under your scenario as we are now.
