Why are we going out of our way to lower our standards (equally), instead of raising them (equally)? It’s like: Bill Clinton got away with it—and so should Trump!https://twitter.com/barebonesyoga/status/1038760102076002304 …

I think the issue is the umpire’s application of the penalty to her when most men are rarely penalized for on the court outbursts. We all remember epic McEnroe & Ilie N outbursts & rarely if ever were they pen w loss of game. Seems a fair criticism she’s making.

It’s what it reveals about how black women and other marginalized groups are judged and policed in the workplace and society compared to white men. Sure, raise the overall standard, but sexism and racism are part of the conversation. Why do you want to sweep those under the rug?

Sweeping it under the rug maintains the status quo. When we call this out, its typical to be minimized. They already know the disparity and they don't care.

This is a situation that should demand serious reflection for any man who doubts there was sexism involved. All of the top male players get away with this and are managed by the refs before a more serious penalty is given. It's not a matter of lowering standards.

By the rule the penalties were warranted. Where umpire got it is using some discretion in a big situation. Could have given Serena one warning about her language before penalizing her a game.

This is totally out of context of her history and the history of women in tennis. I’m by no means an expert but historically women have gotten punished for things men do all the time. If this was the first or even second time she had dealt with this then I would agree.

I see your point. I’d like to see the actual standard then. In this case (not politics) is it “at the umpure’s discretion” to penalize a game for an outburst? If so, I’d say a better rule s/b created that removes the application of discretion.

It's not a sexist issue. It's a 'ref should've acted with more restraint' issue.
