I’m sympathetic to the rule of law. And here, Serena reminds me of Trump. It’s victimhood. It’s saying that, because *other* people can break the rules, you should get to, too. It’s calling out “fake news”...https://twitter.com/BillKristol/status/1038754140820783106 …

After reading a bit and watching some clips, I've got to say I'm sympathetic to Serena Williams. Why? NOT because I'm woke. Rather because I'm a traditional fan hostile to intrusive & snowflake-like umpiring, an American who roots for other Americans, & an admirer of excellence.

Not all rules are equal. Some rules -- the ball has to land in the service box -- are bright-line rules. Other rules inherently involve a great deal of discretion by the umpire, such as rules about punishing a player for being rude to him.

When the rule is being discretionarily applied to you, feels perfectly fair to discuss whether the discretion has been abused.

To my knowledge Serena doesn’t have a history of playing the victim. That’s not the behavior of a Champion. Serena recognized unfair treatment, something very familiar to her, and stood up for herself. Then she stood up for her opponent. Zero traces of Trump. 100% Champion.

That just doesn’t work in this case, plenty of videos of men saying worse then her and getting no punishment for it. When rules are only enforced for certain people they aren’t rules anymore. She’s not the first woman to have this problem in tennis.

And this is not the first time it has happened to her. On top of that she tends to handle this stuff much better then most. She called for the crowed to stop booing and a couple weeks ago she changed outfits even though the other was designed to fight blood clots.

She doesn’t scream fake news. She usually will say she doesn’t agree with something and then moves on.

I am for consistency from refs/umpires in areas of judgement — and this umpire failed that.

You're missing the point & I don't expect you to understand this b/c you're a man (no offense)...but women are treated different when they are emotional...its ok for men but women have to be "calmed down & reigned in." I've experienced this first hand as a women in biz

This tweet is just so disappointing. What was the rule of law here? Many laws/rules are subject to individual interpretation and enforcement. The point she is trying to make is that women are often penalized for expressing a point of view and held to a higher standard than men.

I think the issue is the umpire’s application of the penalty to her when most men are rarely penalized for on the court outbursts. We all remember epic McEnroe & Ilie N outbursts & rarely if ever were they pen w loss of game. Seems a fair criticism she’s making.

Much more pertinent was an outburst directed at Ramos earlier by a male player that he did nothing about. Guys literally said the exact same thing as Williams.

Yes I think there’s an “application of the rules” at work here. After reading that WaPo article defending Serena & then that other article being tweeted by the former umpire which defends Ramos, it seems there’s no hard/fast rule as to what inapp behavr is.

Worst. Take. Ever. The uneven application of the Rule of Law is on display here, not victimhood. It’s analogous to the enforcement of marijuana laws primarily against POC and the poor.
