... how are you distinguishing between “trump backers” and “mainstream conservatives”? Trump got elected by, presumably, his backers. The “mainstream conservatives” are mainstream why?

It's really hard to appropriately label things in the Trump era. I mean, I don't think Grassley is a "Never Trumper." And the moderate vs. conservative dichotomy doesn't work--nor does the outsider vs. establishment framing. What would you recommend as terminology?
-
That’s true, old labels don’t really apply when in context of trump, other than still GOP and Dem. I would say “some conservatives” still oppose trump (or other elements of his admin) but I can’t think of any reason they’re more mainstream than Trump’s full supporters.
-
In this case, I was talking about Sessions. And IMHO, Sessions’ brand of populist/nationalist conservatism isn’t mainstream—certainly not in terms of his former GOP colleagues in the Senate.

Can you say “fall guy”? GOP are looking for someone to blame for the upcoming loss of the house. For a lot of conservative voters, kids in cages is the last straw. GOP won’t blame 45* but Sessions is convenient. Of course, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. By bye Jeff

Who are “mainstream conservatives” these days? Define your terms. Seems like Trump has taken over your party and your movement.

Calling them “mainstream” doesn’t absolve them. They knew what he was, they still voted for him. We are our choices. We stand with human garbage, or we stand against it.

Well, based on his ideology and immigration policies dating back to his days in the Senate; Sessions is a devil little weasel. I hope everyone abandons him and he’d eventually leave with hits tail between his legs.

He should have resigned when he recused his self, he's useless!

Jeff Sessions recused himself based on the rules of law. He’s there to protect the citizens of this country, not the occupant of the Oval Office.pic.twitter.com/d1L2xjHHVR

He doesn't need a "constituency" because he's in the cabinet and is too old to run for office again. You call Ocasio-Cortez stupid, but the fact is she's better at life than you.

My understanding is that Sessions was never going to win the "Most Popular Member" contest in the Senate Treefort Club.

Sessions is old school paleocon. So, his natural constituency would be anti-Trump or Trump-skeptic paleocons. Any of those around?
