"Back in the 1990s, when I was a devoted fan of The Rush Limbaugh Show..." There's your answer. The lack of self-awareness in his piece is stunning.

Conservatives pretending to be caught off guard by Trump when you had Reagan and his Welfare Queen speeches and Lee Atwater race-baiting with Willie Horton. It was a strategy to attract white voters that would otherwise never vote Republican against their economic interests

Edmund Burke said "But what is liberty without wisdom and without virtue. It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it folly, vice and madness, without tuition or restraint". A good description of what we are witnessing today, folly, vice and madness. Good article Matt

Reagan was the bright and shining star, his campaign was hopeful, cheerful, informative and upbeat. Reagan was a good leader and I’m so glad I got to see the good before meeting the bad and the ugly of Trumpism.

Isn't is so sad what it has done to what had been our side of the spectrum and many many americans.

“Back in the 1990s, when I was a devoted fan of The Rush Limbaugh Show, El Rushbo had a line that resonated with me in its simplicity. Speaking of unusually large number of close friends and associates of Bill Clinton who either died mysteriously or were indicted…” Oh honey no

Mmm, mmm, I'm sure this article will answer its own question by acknowledging every Secret Bisexual Muslim Communist rumor that dominated the Republican Party for *checks notes* 10 years straight, and countingpic.twitter.com/MElktPAFNk

Using a sick right-wing conspiracy theory from the ‘90s to prove.. that conservatives weren’t the kooks back then?

Good article Matt. I have similar feelings about the current state of the party. Sometimes I wonder if there is even a place for me anymore here. Let’s hope the “Reagan era” of conservatism was not just a fleeting thing, and will return sometime soon.

Because the Republicans all said and did nothing to stop it. It appears there is end to this crazy TV show. The GOP could stop this shit show now, but they aren't willing to do that. Party over country. Any more easy questions?

While Democrats are going full blown Socialism & devolving into Antifa tranny’s, the resident CNN “conservative” ponders if his party attracts “extremists & kooks”. What a stupid time to be alive.

There is extremism on both sides. Trump is unique and will not be replicated. His rise is a reaction to progressive intolerance and probably could not have happened without 17 candidates in primary. A perfect storm. Dems have same problem with Sanders, Warren, Cortez and others
-
i wouldn't classify it as the same problem. And maybe i'm just biased - but the 17 conservatives they rolled out in 2016 were... horrible.
@JohnKasich was about the only one who made any sense. -
Bush, Kasich and Rubio close policy wise and not much difference in final tax cut and those proposed by various candidates. Trump is not really a Republican like Sanders and his minions are not really Dems. Trump pulls from extreme right and Reform and Bernie from socialists.
-
I was a bernie supporter - and for all intents and purposes i am a dem. Bernie also isn't a socialist - he's a capitalist (though he wouldn't describe himself that way - his policies and context given in discussions prove otherwise) /1
-
I agree - bush and rubio weren't bad either. Bush had the same problem hillary had - robotic and uninspiring. Rubio - i actually don't know why rubio wasn't more attractive to conservatives. Honestly the only thing i can think of is - He's not white.
-
I think Hillary would have won had she selected Bernie as her running mate. But because he was an outsider to party politics she had to stay with a party insider. Also Stein cost her votes as well in key areas. It was so close very little things would have changed outcome.
-
I absolutely agree with that. Bernie would have put her over. But as a liberal - i'm actually glad they both lost. 2016 president was going to be a 1 termer. And had hillary won - GOP would have obstructed, nothing would've changed, and in 2020 GOP would have momentum
-
Hillary does not wear well. She would definitely been one termer. I have said all along I would have been fine with one term of Hillary followed by 8 years of Rubio over what we have now.
