The political parties have changed uniforms and adopted each other’s arguments. But for intellectually honest observers who are trying to call balls and strikes, one question remains relevant: Should a president’s character even matter?https://www.thedailybeast.com/yes-bill-clinton-helped-pave-the-way-for-donald-trump …

I am a pretty ardent feminist. I did not vote for Clinton twice because I believed the women. I campaigned for Hillary in 2008, she was the better candidate. I held my nose & voted for “hope & change”. Trump is unfit. Yes, character matters.

Yeah, but somehow "character matters". Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

It’s not the pot calling the kettle black for me. Flaws are part of what we are. And the presidents of tomorrow will have an even tougher time b/c they will have grown up on social media, every bad decision laid bare. But character is about decision making guided by virtues.

I get especially irritated at these conversations because I know they mean "the Democratic establishment" but it gets thrown at Dems personally on the ground too and I was like nine years old when the Clinton crap happened. Don't hold me responsible for that.

Yes. And a central question here ought to be whether the defects in Clinton's character and the defects in Trump's character are roughly equivalent. I'll hang up and listen.

Not even close. Don’t really care what husband and wife do with their marriage. But u need some ethics when running a country. Trumps a true con in the worst way. Trump showed what he’s always been.

Some liberals at the time were appalled at Clinton’s conduct and said so. I was against impeachment but in favor of shunning forever.

You willfully ignore the actions against Russia and fail to note any impeachable office other than you don't like him personally. Got it.

Character is defined as the mental & moral qualities distinctive to an individual. A USA president, the putative leader of the free world, who lacks good character will also lack moral authority.

Yes, it all started in the 1990s because it was "about the economy stupid". After 20 yrs of no character in politics I give you Donald J Trump. Let's be honest though, character in politics has been sketchy at best for longer than that, it's just front and center now! #AgeOldProb

I agree. Obama set a terrible precedent when he weaponized the IRS and DOJ to target political opponents. Zero character or morality.

I remember clearly having this discussion be4 Clinton’s election. I vote Dem no matter what when it gets down to 2 candidates. Primaries are when it’s time to weed out the bad seeds PS At the time it was (only!) adultery. I think now, since I believe Juanita Broderick it’s diff

So, it’s hard to say, if I was stuck with an amoral flawed man like Clinton again at the final election. What choice would I have as a staunch Dem? How am I different than a Trump voter then?
