@HumphreyBohun To be fair, this is one aspect of Putin I agree with. His reintroduction of Russia's Christian past is actually a positive that may in the future make Russia a better place. This is not excusing what Putin has done. I am just be intellectually honest. -
*Exploitation* of Russia's Christian past. I generally agree but this doesn't justify devout Westerners looking at Putin as some sort of avatar and champion of white Christianity and isn't necessary to challenge aggressive secularism in more liberal states.

Everyone in this photo is a former or a current KGB (FSB) agent. This sort of thing has been, in fact, a key feature of official Christianity in Russia (except for the Old Believers and other, mostly persecuted, sects) since Peter the Great.pic.twitter.com/N3yIEEyo1j

Peter learned the craft of shipbuilding in Holland and ran a tight one
thereafter. -
Catherine the great actually was the best ruler Russia had. She had a vaccine program against small pox.
-
Is some ways, before she was scared out of her wits by the French Revolution. However, she was always very aware of the weakness of her position: as a foreigner (a very minor German princess), a convert, & owing her thrown to a coup against her husband, which she had engineered.
-
She could not risk any conflict with the Church, so although she sympathised with the Jews and wished to relax the Pale of the Settlement, on first signs of resistance from the Church she retreated. The same happened with most of her other reforms. Her private life and morals
-
were appalling and she recorded it all in her diary, reading which even today will make many blush (or should).

I don't know about you, but in my neck of the woods I'm getting not a few Trump friendlies playing up the 'Christian America & Christian Russia against the Brown Islamic Hoards' thing.

-

You’re right on the stragegic part btw. You’ll know Christian nations by their fruit and their fruit sure as heck isn’t suppressing their citizens’ natural rights.

It is more complex than portrayed. And the Pope probably has a more positive view of the Russian Orthodox Church than most other Orthodox churches. Putin is occupying a space that Bush & Obama vacated when their Middle East wars helped destroy ancient Christian churches

Also complicating. Ukrainian president slams Russian church as 'national security threat' https://au.news.yahoo.com/ukrainian-president-slams-russian-church-national-security-threat-125648881--spt.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=tw … via
@Y7News -
