In a way, the serious Maria Butina (accused Russian agent) story and the Sacha Baron Cohen stories are similar. Both demonstrate how vulnerable prominent conservative political figures are to being duped/infiltrated, via a referral/introduction (specifically, from a gun group).

In both cases, the “spy” is a foreigner who presents themselves as a conservative ally. This covers a multitude of sins.
