I think a lot of the "Never Trumpers" fall into that category and they are a huge part of the "resistance".

I should explain that a bit.
#NeverTrumpers are staying conservative & not joining the Democratic party but will vote for the Democrats to save the future of their party. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I see. Leave it to u 2 make an awesome discussion, Matt.^^ -
That's me in a nutshell. I left the GOP when Trump got elected. I can never support a buffoon nor give up my valies. I am voting with the Dems to get that asshat out.
-
I see it in my own family and co-workers. Having said that... I have quite a few Trump apologists, in my family, too
Which is why I stay on twitter, they are all on FB.

Yes, this was the conclusion I ultimately and somewhat regrettably came to. It seems to be the only path back to reasonable political dialogue. The GOP no longer embraces the subset of values that were important to me

Don't become a Democrat. That doesn't mean anything. However, pledge to vote for the Democrats until the cancer that is Trump has been tossed to the ash heap of history.

You can vote for Democrats and not actually "be" a Democrat.
#Resistance is good on twitter but doesn't change Trump or the#ComplicitGOP.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Heaven forfend. By your own logic Republicans across the country "tacitly endorse" child molestation, white supremacy, and unfettered corruption. Is that your position? No one is asking you to become a Democrat, but twiddling your thumbs and saying "how awful" doesn't cut it

The idea that you need to be reassured that you won’t get democrat cooties if you vote to oppose a tyrannical dictator says a lot about how we got here in the first place.

Schmidt’s point I think was that the Democratic Party is the only party left adhering to the actual rule of law and norms of civil and political discourse. That is to be supported, not necessarily that party’s entire policy platform.

Then maybe you should call it simply "not being Republican".

Maybe get over your tribalism like the other adults of your party (Painter,
@TheRickWilson,@RadioFreeTom ) they aren't necessarily joining the Dem party, but recognize the evil that's infected the GOP. Dem tents are getting wider and wider.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Ugh- this is totally useless. I don't care if you join the Democrats or not. Our government (led by the Republicans) are ripping children away from their parents, putting those children in cages and camps, and has no plan for reunification. Priorities, please.

You could also argue that Trump’s base considers people like Schmidt (Gerson, Kristol, etc) elites and are cheering such a departure.

Vote Democrat is the only way to a sane Republican party. The Republican party left you, man. No use hanging around thinking you might get back together. Time to move on.

Yes Matt...
@SteveSchmidtSES has the correct analysis. The last election was about the "Lesser Evil" for many people. How did that work out? Would you rather have Hillary as President right now or Trump given everything you know today? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

No one cares about symbolic gestures like officially joining the Dem Party. The question is, would you go out and vote for a status quo Democrat over a Trumpian Republican.

Yes. But three things: 1) You’re not required to agree on every issue to join a party. 2) As/if moderate R’s join the Dem party, it will become more conservative. 3) Leaving the GOP, without joining Dems, makes the GOP more conservative (worse candidates will win primaries).
-
It won’t make it more conservative, it will make it more reactionary. It quit being conservative when it allowed Trump to be its nominee
-
That’s a very good point. “Batshit crazy” may have been better wording.
