My point is this: Trump’s election has beclowned the GOP and made it an inhospitable home for people like me. But this has *not* suddenly made me change my mind about abortion or high taxes—or prefer Sotamayor over Gorsuch...https://twitter.com/mattklewis/status/1009398665776193536 …

I understand fleeing the GOP. What I don’t understand is (permanently) aligning with the Democratic Party. But that’s just me.

Well, some of us X-GOPers are not "permanently" aligning with Democrats. Just temporarily supporting their election to balance the power and end Trumpism. At this juncture, that is a far nobler strategy than letting the GOP dismantle democracy.

From a #NeverTrumper to a #NeverTrumper. The President's constant disparaging of the press, the FBI, his own DOJ, members of his own party, etc. as well as his flattery of Putin, KJU and other dictators ... I see as an attempt to dismantle democracy or at best undermine it.

Amen! Trump assaults the institutions safeguarding our democratic republic on a daily basis. He is a threat to our civil liberties and poses a grave danger to the world.

There are these things called primaries where you can generally have a say on voting for candidates whose policies you agree with and whose attitude/character is most to your liking. Make use of them.

I'm relatively progressive, but also a realist. I see this complaint from progs a lot about people like Sens Jeff Flake & Bob Corker "if they oppose the President, why don't they vote with Dems?" Umm, because they are conservatives If they opposed tax cuts they'd be Dems already

My main issue with that is... Where are the fiscal conservatives? Adding 1.9 trillion to the debt is not a good thing.

Hibernating through the slow part of their life cycle. Fiscal conservatives sleep until Democrats take power. Then their numbers blossom.

I like this kind of thinking because all too often our vision is narrowed by dualism so pervasive in the U.S. Lots of false dilemmas: Us vs them, you vs me, all or nothing. Our options are not limited to linear reductionism, way more points in the line than the two endpoints.

Live the way you put that, K. I've been a lifelong Democrat but the far left is just as nauseating as the far right, nothing is more nauseating as Trumpism. I don't know how you have stayed neutral all your life. I have to feel like I have a home.

View aligning with the Dems as a course of antibiotics you have to take until the Trump fever has broken. Then you can go back to being who you want to be. Cuz that's really only medicine that will work right now.
