Thought-provoking. Conservatives need to think long and hard about not only who to vote for but who to campaign for or against. I am -- tweeting isn't enough.

I know many who are planning to vote D in Nov to “teach the GOP a lesson”. I can’t get there. To me that’s ceding my principles. I’d rather leave a box unchecked than vote for someone I share no beliefs with. I believe there are other ways to bring back the Reagan GOP.

I respect you
@mattklewis but I have 2respectfully disagree. All these ppl you cite as Conservatives deserting the party are nothing more than Democrats who identify as Republicans. They are 2 sides of the same coin who have different rules 4 us than the elites they r -
You don’t get to dictate who I am or am not. I live in a deep red state & a registered R for 20+ yrs til Trump. I’ve never been elite anything. I didn’t leave the GOP it left me for a demagogue.
-
1st,
@POTUS is NO DEMAGOGUE. I’m guessing you believe in onerous regulations that strangle the business community, higher taxes, open borders & abortion b/c those are democrat values & Trump doesn’t support ANY of that. Fact:Dems LOVED@realDonaldTrump B4 he ran as a Republican

It’s about constitutionalism. The system of checks and balances does not work if congressional majorities are cravenly subservient to the president.

I got there after the complete silence from most of Congress over the last 18 months. They are scared of Trump (especially after the Sanford loss). We have to scare them they will lose the general election and that ~20% of the old-school GOP is still relevant.

Interesting to read some comments about
#NeverTrump, who happen to be most some of the oldest, principled, most loyal conservatives such as my 87 year old mother who worked for Barry Goldwater.#2018Midterms#RIPGOPThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Terrific column, Matt. I fear the Party of Lincoln (& Ike, Reagan, Bush) is dead. Would a Reagan/Bush candidate in ‘24 even want support from Trump’s MAGA base? It’s two different parties now.

Interesting. I, however, can't go there. If we don't like Trump, then oppose Trump when he does things we don't like. But don't root against other GOPers as a way to stop Trump. Each candidate should stand on own merits, not fall due to Trump's demerits.
-
Tell Trump that. He savaged fellow Republicans just for criticizing him. He’s completely disloyal.

Nothing wrong with identifying ‘rot’ at base of Conservative tree & pruning it out. We, the faux liberals & other sane Americans, will truly appreciate the gesture.

Apropos to Matt’s column & my comment, here’s a prime example of Conservative rot
