interesting phenomenon I’m observing... 1. Trump does something free marketers hate (tariffs), that nat sec cons hate (coddles dictators), or that socons used to condemn. 2. Liberals reflexively criticize Trump, thereby arguing (my) conservative positions. A silver lining?

Matt, you are making this issue way to complex. It appears to me that a majority, comprised of Democrats and Republicans, favor free trade. Continuing to divide people along the lines of liberal and conservative is short sighted.

So you are saying the Democrats prior to Trump liked the coddling of dictators? Can you see how a liberal such as myself can rightfully resent that? It is amazing how the vileness of Trump seems to offer an opportunity for some to attack liberals. (sigh).

Liberals and Conservatives agree on many things, we'll go back to fighting about tax policies, entitlements and abortion once the emergency is over.

        3. Those conservative positions become "anti-Trump" and are reflexively abandoned by the Republican party. Some silver lining.

An alternative interpretation is that your positions are Democrat positions, or at least that they’re demonstrably not positions the Republican party as it stands today espouses at all

But if everyone is an ideological switch hitter, nothing they say matters. When parties switch, opinions switch and nothing matters. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Reflexively? As in if they had a *Democrat* president threatening a needless trade war they'd "reflexively" support it? Quite a reductive tweet.

No, I don't need a good faith "debate" to tell me how I and fellow liberals view the troops. What right wingers always confuse is that if a liberal doesn't condone certain military actions that some how means they don't support the troops. One has nothing to do with the other

. . . and that is demonstrated time and time again with the Democrats support legislation that actually helps our vets while Republicans always seem to find a reason to be against it....

Maybe we need to put all of those tribal labels away and discussions as people? There is plenty of common ground that gets nowhere because of radical issues on the edges that are not common nor do majorities actually believe in.
