Reciprocity is a natural instinct. If someone salutes you, your instinct is (probably) to return that salute. This is to say Trump wasn’t being malicious; he was being played. This is now NK propaganda!—the result of an unprepared president.https://twitter.com/ianbremmer/status/1007256764117606401 …

You are being too kind. I don't agree that "reciprocity" is a natural instinct at all. Catering to people and things you admire is very common (if not a goal) of those with low self-esteem. Trump's response is incredibly telling.

Have you ever had a beggar try to hand you something? What if someone put out their hand for a handshake? There’s a natural temptation to reciprocate. You have to be on your game and prepared not to fall for it. Trump wasn’t. (My take, at least.)

Oh, I agree with a tendency to return kindness and respect when warranted. But if someone in a white sheet offered their hand, would I shake it .. No. If someone wearing a swastika raised their arm palm down, would I mimic them ... No.

He’s a Soldier & a representative of his country, even if it’s NK. Trump respects Soldiers. So NK Soldiers are like the KKK now? It’s a very repressive regime but keep in mind that Soldiers are entitled to respect & even protections in warfare that terrorists are not entitled to.

That’s a North Korean General. NOT just a soldier. He’d be worse than the KKK.

You don’t know that. Most of these guys are nothing more than yes men trying to survive in a merciless environment. Those that hold such positions in such a regime tend to be talentless and afraid of their own shadow.

That’s fair. But a few points: 1) No matter the context, it’s an absolutely horrible visual. 2) Trump has been repeatedly played by hostile foreign media. Remember the Russians released the Oval Office photo last year? 3) Those excusing Trump would’ve torched Obama if he did it.
