Marco Rubio is doing something very interesting: Instead of trying to swim upstream & stand athwart the populist zeitgeist, he’s trying to co-opt it—to stress the positive aspects, and drop the pernicious ones.

The hiring of Heritage Action bros was a clear signal that this is a strategic shift. It’s unclear whether it’ll work, but I think it’s a much shrewder strategy than, say, what Jeff Flake has tried. It’s possible Rubio can re-channel our populist urges toward something positive

Rubio’s attacks on China’s IP theft (a legit problem) is another obvious example of this strategy. People get to scratch the American nationalism itch, without delving into the more unseemly Trumpian aspects of nationalism.

Except he also wants tariffs, in violation of WTO rules, basic economics, history and simple common sense

So has he changed his political stance on some policies or simply seeing what sticks in this environment for best personal outcome in the long term?

I’m not sure the “without delving into...” portion can work long-term. That’s not a side effect of Trumpism, it’s a driver.

i fail to understand why this isn't the obvious strategy of every republican. telling your voters they're wrong, ie flake, kasich, et al. rather than at least making an effort to address their concerns seems obviously doomed to fail

like you can oppose the visa lottery, which no one would ever propose new today if it weren't already on the books but now you can't change it, without going full nativist, for example

We’ll have to wait until someone with more spine than an octopus tries it, I think.
