Can network analysis help us understand the contexts under which dances matter most to bees? We use NBDA to compare the contribution of dances vs. social olfactory information in guiding bees to food. Out today () , Will Hoppitt

At the time I IDed 5+ red throats, 2-3 black throats and a great northern. All the rest were too far out to ID with bins. 10(ish) red throats (bit distant but fairly sure) moving south past Mullion (from cliffs near Poldhu) perhaps suggests these made up a chunk of the numbers..

Mixed Models Offer No Freedom from Degrees of Freedom Opinion by Göran Arnqvist: Haven't read it closely yet, but argues that badly specified LMMs lead to overconfidence & cause pseudoreplication, something LMMs meant to solve

How quickly people recover from an infectious disease can be more significant than how many contacts they have. If most nodes recover quickly, the few that don't will be the ones doing the damage and the old theories about network topology no longer hold:

To count an animal population if you can't catch them all: capture some, mark them, release, and capture again. The ratio of new vs already seen tells you something about the total number. Shown here is iterated mark-and-recapture with a Bayesian updates to belief about pop size
