Sad about the FUD that System76 are still spreading about the LVFS and fwupd -- I'm trying to ignore it but it's just 100% untrue. It's also unhelpful when trying to convince other vendors to join the LVFS.https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxhardware/comments/aohc8x/some_system76_hardware_beginning_to_see_coreboot/ …

It's kind of crappy that we went from "we're writing out own firmware updating service" to "LVFS lets a third party know what everyone is downloading!!1!OMFGBBQ"

It's kind of crappy we went from, “I don't think this will work” to “Don't buy System76… buy a Dell XPS instead.” Also, publicly lying about and mocking your partners isn't a good look. LVFS and fwupd as pitched to System76 wasn't a viable solution.

They built their thing and shared their concerns about the centralized model back in May of last year. Obviously discussions between them and Richard haven't picked back up or been productive, otherwise I don't think there'd be this senseless back and forth spat.

It's not a spat. I want system76 employees to stop spreading untrue statements about fwupd and the LVFS. It's gone past hurting my feelings, it's now hurting the Linux ecosystem.

Yeah, some comments in that thread seem misinformed at least, but some concerns are real (and were only ever addressed in your blog post today, even though they shared them back in May). I do think LVFS should be managed by a transparent org instead of an individual.

It's also a bummer it's not a decentralized model by design, but hosting an instance of LVFS sounds really interesting and is probably something privacy-conscious OEMs should investigate.

I'm sure System76 is also unhappy with untrue statements being posted on the GNOME blog, and high-profile developers actively telling people to purchase from their competitor on the GNOME blog, though. That's not how you get your partners to work with you.

You have no idea how hard Richard is working with his partners in the lvfs. Sadly, system76 has chosen not to be one of them. Which is fine, don't get me wrong. Just stop spreading misinformation.

And its not like we aren't trying to the lvfs under linux foundation governance. You'd think that is an easy thing to do... but it isn't.
