So @HawleyMO's higher ed bill on student debt is quite clever. He would force universities to pay half the debt of student graduates who default. https://www.hawley.senate.gov/sen-hawley-break-higher-education-monopoly-provide-more-options-career-training …

Liberals are freaking out about these comments, but Hawley is correct. Does anyone doubt Wall Street/Silicon Valley and their weird globalization fetish has harmed the middle class? Beating Hawley is going to require better policy, not better tantrums.https://twitter.com/hamandcheese/status/1151277130845753345?s=20 …

It's foolish to act like using the term cosmopolitan upper class is a code word, and doing so comes dangerously close to making any critique of corporate power out of the bounds of liberal discourse. Which may be the point...

I'm far more offended at @JulianCastro having no idea what private equity is and how it harming millions of people than I am at the use of the term cosmopolitan to describe rich people in cities.

If Democrats were super populist and going after corporate power, and @HawleyMO were blocking them and using this terminology, I'd say critics have a point. But that's not the case. Hawley is at war with the Koch brothers and way too many Dems are still in thrall to Google.

Guess who is the only Republican to criticize the Federal Trade Commission for going easy on Facebook? Josh Hawley. Guess who is the only Senator to ask about Facebook's payments product before FB unleashed Libra? Josh Hawley. Who is trying to protect newspapers? Hawley.

If you don't want to be criticized as favoring cosmopolitan elites, then next time there's a financial crisis, don't bail out bankers, shovel growth to the technology sector, and pour money onto wealthy lawyers in coastal mega-cities. Or throw tantrums. Either one's fine.

Reading the full speech by @HawleyMO and it’s... good straightforward populist republicanism. There’s nothing coded here. https://www.hawley.senate.gov/senator-josh-hawleys-speech-national-conservatism-conference …

Tom Friedman represented a global elite of Harvard/Silicon Valley/bankers that pulled away from the rest of society and caused massive damage. It’s the height of folly to pretend acknowledging this reality is anti-semitic.

What I find appalling about the liberal disdain for Hawley is their misunderstanding of fascism. Fascism is a dangerous social result of misapplied financial power combined with bigotry. Yet they seem to think like libertarians, that fascism is what lives in an individual soul.

The roots of Hitler’s rise were in the Treaty of Versailles and in the poor management of interwar debts by American bankers. Show some anger at financiers if you want to stop fascism.
