Of course Slate is suspicious of someone who prefers to raise a question that reframes the issue, instead of dexterously defending a bad answerhttps://slate.com/business/2018/04/economist-robin-hanson-might-be-americas-creepiest-professor.html …

@robinhanson: “Why are we so un-sympathetic to this particular kind of inequality?” @slate: “Asking why low-status people get treated uncharitably is *dangerous*”

What if—don’t crucify me, here—murder is bad *and* societal shifts have harmed shy, socially-awkward men in a way that harms society as a whole?

What if we live in a world where obesity is a problem and calling a fat person a fatty is also a problem?

What if we live in a world where poor people really should get a job, and where “get a job, you lazy piece of shit” is something only assholes say?

Perhaps a world where Hanson is America’s creepiest economist is also a world where the best questions are the ones that remain unasked because they’re creepy.

Economics is like medicine, in that you have to have a clinical, abstract view of flesh-and-blood beings if you hope to understand them. And if you think economists dehumanize the folks they’re helping, do *not* have an honest conversation with anyone who works in an ER.
