Why did humanity gradually switch from mostly polytheism to mostly monotheism? Is it just noise or are there advantages for monotheism in larger civilizations and disadvantages in smaller?

We just redefined our beliefs as monotheistic. If you believe in God, Jesus, and various saints you kind of are polytheistic.

Best distinction I’ve seen: in polytheistic religions, gods are subordinate to some outside force (eg The Fates). Not so in monotheism.

Maybe that’s a result of one-upmanship? “MY god doesn’t answer to ANYONE.”

This is also why Christians didn’t just play along and worship the emperor in Rome. Other faiths allowed additional gods, not theirs.
