Does anyone know of any research that looks at consumption goods and preference falsification? I.e. A consumer signals that they like X in public, but purchases Y in private (partly to offset the false signal, & partly because Y represents their true preference?)

If I recall correctly, surveys of alcohol consumption indicate that people drink ~half as much alcohol as US states’ sin tax records show was sold.
