Someone should do an in-depth analysis of the differences between 'OMG Japan is taking over" in US pop culture in the 1980s and the current reactions to Chinese expansion.

One difference is that Japan decided to rely on buying oil on the open market, not controlling it directly (learned a hard lesson circa 1945). China’s behavior in Africa, naval buildup, and attempts to get off USD imply that they want direct oil access.

Which is important because it means more of a military-focused approach. Plus they are way more willing to exercise soft power in movies/video games (cf Homefront). Japan was more passive there.

That last dynamic means that if there’s an honest pop culture treatment, it will have to be an indie movie, an indie game, or a novel. Probably the last.
