People talking about the social purpose of libraries bring up a good point I hadn’t thought of: as real estate gets more expensive and computers get cheaper, libraries need to do vastly more every year to justify their existence.

That ignores the fact that UI designers are getting better and better at appealing to a semi- or non-literate audience.

Basically libraries as socialized tech support with a cost structure based on there being no such thing as the Internet is a really bad defense of libraries. We should bulldoze them all preemptively, and rebuild if there’s demand.
