To mostly male, aspie-leaning nerds, “friendliness” is the thing that keeps people from telling you *why you’re wrong*. Real friends correct you; “friendly” people make you stupid.

Politeness is legitimately hard/counterintuitive for some people. There’s a disparate impact if you impose it as a baseline requirement. (Should be obvious if you think of periods before the present day—politeness was definitely a way to keep people in their place.)

It's absolutely difficult for some people, but I do think at least it's one of those deals where people who need an exemption are probably going to have to ask specifically for it. If I know you have Aspberger's I definitely won't be expecting e-mail emojis.

I also think politeness is different than class deference or some of the historically nasty forms, fair point on that.
