Not only did the United Kingdom ban slavery, but also became moral crusaders against the slave trade. The most powerful navy of the era, the British Navy, was used to disrupt the slave trade. Real lives were put on the line to end the barbaric practice.https://twitter.com/tomhfh/status/1269643230318080001 …

Think it is important we don’t forget that the United Kingom was the first country in the world to permenantly ban slavery. Until Wilberforce, almost every society known to man engaged in the barbaric inhuman unjustifiable practice of treating individuals as property.

History is damn complex, there were of course evils perpetrated by the British Empire. But when it comes to slavery in the 19th century, the record is humanistic and admirable. This doesn’t fit well into the “Empire was evil and racist” narrative, so we don’t hear about it.

For the avoidance of doubt, since some are taking this tweet out of context, the 19th century British record on slavery that I'm referring to was to abolish slavery and campaign against the slave trade. Being anti-slavery is humanistic and admirable.

We learned from our mistakes Then I wonder if we still will, and stop tolerating this kind of vandalism - both physical and intellectual?
