The responses are hard to keep up with so I’m muting the thread soon, but I want to be clear that I still care for and value all of my students and want them to succeed. I don’t want them to suffer for their choices; I want them to make better ones. I’ll always work toward that.

I would not be able to look at those students in the same way. How horrible of them. It's one thing for them to live in their disinformation bubble, but completely another to disregard such an important request. These students are not shining examples for the future.

I did the same thing—my wife has a c-section scheduled for a high risk pregnancy in 8 days. The ultrasound did nothing:unmasked stayed unmasked. To be honest, I came home from class both days and cried for a while.

Oh man...Best of luck to you and your wife. People don't understand the intense, constant stress of a high risk pregnancy during covid. We went through it last year, my wife had eclampsia in September and had to deliver 8 weeks early. 6 weeks in NICU.

Really seems to depend on your location. Here, it seems every student is wearing a mask.

Sending love & concern your way. No one should have to work in conditions that make them fear for the health of their loved ones. I’m thankful for mask mandates for this reason. I hate that your appeal to students’ humanity didn’t work & your institution isn’t protecting you.

Great advice. All I was doing was showing a picture of my unborn child every class and explaining the increased risk of COVID complications and death faced by pregnant women. I didn’t even think about being *direct*.
