A tech billionaire is our best shot at a vaccine. But tech journalists spent the last few years cynically whipping up hatred against tech for pageviews. Others did so against billionaires. And still others did so against vaccines. All swirling together into something dangerous.
Yeah, that’s total bullshit. Nobody in my industry is motivated by pageviews. We care about fraud, tax dodging, labour abuses, the gradual erosion of privacy. If tech billionaires don’t like having their dirty laundry exposed, maybe, just maybe, they should stop being scumbags?

Cool! In the meantime, during my eight-year career in the industry, pageviews have never factored in any editorial decision-making. We care about whether something is true, and whether something is worthwhile.

Billionaires may (quite often indeed) be scumbags but that doesn't mean media properties aren't subjected to a conflict of interests. I see it daily in almost every new site I visit. For every news article worth reading there's a list of clickbait "recommended posts".

So...why all the clickbait headlines that contradict the articles? The superficial dogma in place of journalistic research? The blind parroting of political sources. Covid19 coverage in February is a great case study. I’m a big defender of journalism as essential...but be real.
