Irresponsible journalism, including at some of the most respected outlets in the country, has fueled mass incarceration. It’s time to call out these journalists who routinely fearmonger, mislead, & act as stenographers for law enforcement, my first Point:https://theappeal.org/the-point/irresponsible-journalism-fuels-mass-incarceration/#.YBRuYA051PY.twitter …

here is the latest batch that takes law enforcement at their word and harms communities from just this week: @rachelswan here at the Chronicle on @chesaboudin https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Man-accused-of-killing-mother-in-Sacramento-was-15897826.php … with really important pushback from @KyleCBarry here:https://twitter.com/KyleCBarry/status/1354159642889187328?s=20 …

What is even arguably the point of this @sfchronicle story? That we should assume anyone who tries to steal a cell phone is going to shoot their mother? This is dangerous, fearmongering journalism in its purest form. It's got it all. 1/ https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Man-accused-of-killing-mother-in-Sacramento-was-15897826.php …

THREAD: This is another very bad NYT article by the metro desk. Almost everything in here is worth criticizing, include the idea to write the story. But a few high-level thoughts: (1) https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/27/nyregion/melinda-katz-queens.html …

This “news” story is based on a nonscientific “survey” by a business group that appears to have held back the most important data in the survey by providing a “word cloud” instead of charts and numbers (which reporters could have used) for the response to this key question. https://twitter.com/Oregonian/status/1354591648886497286 … pic.twitter.com/SHOnqTlGsK

The stories draw on emotionally-charged, outlier cases that manufacture a sense that the likelihood of violent crime victimization is much higher than it is, then launder rhetorically overblown statements from law enforcement officials as unbiased expert opinion.

Lawmakers and other govt officials should call out these stories, reject the pressure placed on them to scale back evidence-based decarceral policies or even implement more carceral policies, work harder to educate their communities on policies that will actually make them safer.

When readers are made to feel unsafe, they go looking for a public official to point the finger at: a reform-minded district attorney, legislators who vote for bail reform, or a governor who commuted prison sentences.

Unfortunately, those public officials often respond with carceral and punitive policies that keep us from addressing our mass incarceration crisis and pursuing policies that actually make us safer. In short, bad journalism too often leads to bad policy.
